Leroy Aasland attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where
he played baseball. He graduated in 1957. The woodcut he created which is in the Fine Arts
Collection, "Seated Man," was exhibited in the Fine Arts Festival of April 16-22, 1961. In a
statement about the woodcut, Mr. Aasland explained that his grandfather posed for this print
before he died. He stated that his grandfather had frequently expressed his love for Norway and
the family he left behind when he emigrated. He had engaged in deep sea fishing in Norway but
never saw his homeland again after arriving in the United States. Aasland said his grandfather
was “a kind, gentle and quiet man who seemed to exude strength even near the end of his life.”
