Biography

David P. Aurelius was born in 1952. After graduating from Luther College with a degree in art with an emphasis in pottery in 1974, David and his wife, Jeanne, founded Clay Bay Pottery in Ellison Bay, WI. The pottery and gallery celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006. David attended the Pond Farm summer workshops founded by Marguerite Wildenhain between 1972 and 1980. David also attended professional development workshops with Dean Schwarz at the South Bear Creek Art School in Highlandville, IA, and the University of Minnesota.

In addition to managing the Clay Bay Pottery, David and his wife are artists-in-residence at schools across Wisconsin. They have led large-scale mural projects also for churches and community non-profits although most of their projects occur in elementary schools. A Mural Residency Process is outlined on their website.

The Heron Bowl donated by David to the Pond Farm Collection was created in 1997 or 1998. The wheel-thrown bowl was decorated using paper cut stencils to form a pattern of white herons in the bottom of the bowl. The interior was covered with green and blue slip with a gloss glaze. The outside is black and tan.
