Biography
David Clark Freed was born in Toledo, Ohio, on May 23, 1936. He received his BFA degree from Miami
University (Toledo, Ohio) and his MFA from the University of Iowa. He also studied at the Royal College of
Art in London, England.
Freed has had a lengthy career as a professor of painting and printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University in
Richmond, Virginia. He also taught for one year at the Toledo Museum School of Art and has been a visiting lecturer
at a number of academic institutions. He has received numerous awards for his works and exhibited in a variety of
individual and group exhibitions. His art works are in the collections of such institutions as the Art Institute of
Chicago, the Mint Museum of Art (Charlotte, North Carolina), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has also exhibited
internationally. His works are in numerous corporate collections and in fifteen American embassies.
The Fine Arts Collection contains two etchings by Freed, both acquired from exhibits held during the Fine Arts
Festivals. “The Young Bride” was featured in the exhibit accompanying the Fine Arts Festival, April 21 through May 5,
1963. “Three Cornered Catch” was exhibited at the Festival which was held in the Luther College Union, April 5 through
April 19, 1964. Freed also exhibited at several other Festivals during the 1960’s.
