Biography
Raymond Ellis George was born on September 13, 1933, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He received his BA degree in 1955 and
his MA degree in 1962, both from the University of Northern Iowa. He began teaching at Dubuque Senior High School
in Dubuque, Iowa, but was also a lecturer in art and printmaking at Clarke College in Dubuque. He also had
experience as an instructor and critic teacher at the Laboratory High School at Indiana University. After
teaching at the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Nebraska, he became a Professor of Art at
Illinois State University where he taught drawing and printmaking. George died in Bloomington, Illinois, May
5, 2005.
George entered numerous competitive exhibitions starting in the early 1960’s. He also participated in group and two
person shows and one man shows throughout the United States. He received a number of purchase awards for his art
works. His art is in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery at the
University of Nebraska, the University of Colorado in Boulder, and the Library of Congress. He frequently was a guest
artist at workshops, especially in the Midwest.
George entered art works in two Fine Arts Festivals. At the Watercolor, Print, Drawing Exhibition which was part of the
Festival held from December 9 – December 19, 1964, George received a purchase prize for his etching, “It is Necessary to
Be of One’s Time.” George said of this work that it was executed while he lived in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1964. He noted it
was a copperplate etching with sepia ink, drawn, etched and printed by the artist.
