Biography

Marion John Kitzman was born in What Cheer, Iowa, on June 8, 1929. He graduated from Drake University in 1950 with a BFA degree. Kitzman’s MA degree was awarded in painting from San Francisco State University. He did additional graduate studies at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the University of Illinois, and the University of Iowa. His professional life was spent teaching first at Cedar Falls High School (1954-1956) and then at West High School in Waterloo, Iowa (1957-1963). He also taught at the University of Iowa, Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, Washington) and Iowa State University where he was a professor of architecture 1968 until his retirement. Art by Kitzman is included in numerous public and corporate collections.

Kitzman exhibited in Fine Arts Festivals from 1960-1964. In the exhibition accompanying the Festival held April 21 through May 5, 1963, his oil painting “And to Dust Return” was purchased for the Fine Arts Collection.
