Biography
John Arthur Knudsen was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his BA degree from Luther College in 1960. He went on to earn his MFA from the University of Iowa in 1963 and to work with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris in 1974. After several years of teaching in public schools, Knudsen became a professor of art at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois, in 1967. The remainder of his teaching career was spent at this college although he gave guest lectures at other universities and colleges. Knudsen retired in 1998.
Knudsen participated in numerous group exhibitions and one man shows throughout his career. He is affiliated with several galleries both in the Midwest and in New York City. On four different occasions he has been included in exhibits hosted by the Art Institute of Chicago.
Knudsen exhibited his art in several Fine Arts Festivals. His color intaglio print, “Sade’s Garden” was purchased after the Print/Watercolor/Drawing show held from December 7 through December 16, 1967. Knudsen said of this print that it was a “two color print and was done with soft ground and line etch on copper.”
Knudsen also participated in an exhibit at Luther College held September 5-October 15, 2003, in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts. This exhibit, called “Lasting Impressions,” featured four professional artists who were influenced by Prof. Orville Running, College Artist and printmaker, who taught art for nearly four decades at Luther. The exhibit brochure noted,“The current exhibit recognizes the school’s printmaking legacy and provides visual evidence that good teaching creates lasting impressions.”
