Collection:

Marguerite Wildenhain has been the most significant donor to the Fine Arts Collection, both in number and also in the superior caliber and merit of works given. In 1973, she donated 51 pieces of her own pottery to the College, which she personally judged to be of especially high quality. This gift was followed in 1981 by a collection of 37 of her drawings. At that time, she also donated 145 drawings and woodcuts by the German Expressionist artist Gerhard Marcks, her mentor and life-long friend from the Bauhaus. After her death in California in 1985, her 8 Gerhard Marcks bronze sculptures were bequeathed to the College through her estate along with her collection of 25 pre-Columbian pottery pieces. Images of the pre-Columbian pottery are available at the end of this text.

In addition to works of art, Wildenhain also donated a collection of rare books which was added to the Luther College Library, and a mineral collection that was accessioned into the College’s Geology Collection.

Images of the Fine Arts Collection’s art works created by Marguerite Wildenhain and Gerhard Marcks can be found on the Artists page linked to their respective names.
